Missional Micro Post on Bi-Vocational Pastoring

I’ve been a bi-vocational pastor for about five weeks now.  I just thought I’d offer some very brief reflections.

1) Days are full.  So are evenings.  Being bi-vocational is a lot working two jobs.  I crash pretty hard most nights.

2) I don’t have as much time for  blogging and communicating.  Hmm.  The sky hasn’t fallen…  And more people are visiting the blog than before.  Again, hmm.

3) It’s so much fun to be learning new things, to be working with my hands and my mind, and to see God providing for my family that way.

4) My coworkers rock at their jobs.  And they are patient teachers.  And we’ve had some pretty awesome conversations about life.  I’ve had the privilege of praying with some of them, too.  My main witness is that I work with all my heart – seeking to please God.  And every day I want to get better at it.

5) It seems like there’s renewed energy within FCMC, too – or maybe its just renewed joy in ministry for me.  It’s liberating to be able to pour myself into ministry without wondering too much about finances.  It’s also liberating to see resources coming into FCMC, knowing they will be focused more toward mission rather than salaries and administration.

6) It feels right.  I know it could change – but really, it just feels right.

7) Hugh Halter’s book BiVo is a good read if you are considering this step.

God is good!

Heeding this could save your church, ministry, or group.

“Many well intentioned followers of Jesus think that forgiving comes in the form of ignoring. “Pretend it didn’t happen,” they’ll say.  Or, “They probably didn’t mean it.”  This is simply a cheap way of excusing someone’s bad behavior.  And while doing so may make you feel like a bigger, more spiritual person, in truth you are not.  This way of responding or talking falls way short of the high standard that Jesus sets for forgiveness.  To forgive someone goes far beyond just excusing their behavior and moving on.”  from The Art of Neighboring by Pathak and Runyon.

That’s well put.  It’s about foolishly being nice when you are called to demonstrate love.   I’ve seen lots of damage inflicted on relationships and ministries because people excuse bad behavior (and then take it further and go after someone who won’t.)

For the sake of the Kingdom of God, please heed it!

But when we don’t, God is still good!

FCMC Worship Gathering This Saturday

1.   This Saturday we have a special worship service.  We’ll be at the Wehmeier’s to worship as we eat dinner together.  The gathering begins at 6:30 at 401 Brambly Vine Way, St. Johns, FL 32259.  Expect good food and a relaxed but intentional evening of worship.  Also, we’ll hear an update on Nicholl’s experience leading Cowboy Church at the Hippodrome!
(The address is not on Google Maps. Directions from Faith Community Church: Go west on CR210.  Keep going straight onto Greenbriar Road.  The next red light is the intersection with Roberts Road.  Take the 3rd right after that intersection on Brambly Vine into a new subdivision.  The house is about a half mile in on the left.  (If you use GPS, navigate to 1679 Green Briar Road then proceed west and look for Brambly Vine on your right.))
2.  It’s potluck.  The main course will be provided.
3.  Special opportunity.  Do you have a kitchen appliance you never use (like say, a pasta maker).  Bring it and donate it to the Young Lives Yard sale.  For the achievers – make something with it for the meal.  But seriously – Heather will be taking a load of stuff for the Young Lives Yard Sale.  If you have questions, call Heather at 904-599-3368 or Kris at 904-687-5829.
4. Jesus will be there!

The Story of First Coast Missional Communities (So Far)

before the bags

First Missional Community Going Out

Our Story (so far).   In the Spring of 2013, God pulled together about  twenty people from five different churches.  We had a number of things in common.  Many of us had been inspired by followers of Jesus we’d met on mission trips.  We earnestly desired to see Christ change lives and renew  our city.  We had heard that God was doing that in other places through groups called missional communities.  And we were willing to try. We agreed to meet together for a season and we organized our life around worship, prayer, fellowship, and mission.  This temporary micro-church was a “trial missional community”.  We learned a lot about ourselves, our neighbors, and how to (and how not to) run a missional community.  We also discovered strength in community, how to be more natural and public with our faith, more courageous in prayer, more adventurous in service, and how good God is.

After our season together, about half of us returned to participation in their home churches.  But the experience had a deep impact on several of us:  we still valued our connections to traditional local churches  but we could not return to church as usual.  We continued meeting as the Fellowship of Believers Missional Community, an ongoing micro-church based at a home in the Southridge neighborhood of Jacksonville, focused on discipleship, service, and doing life together.  Shortly thereafter, we started another meeting near CR210 in St. John’s County.  Together, the group formed First Coast Missional Communities.  We want to do life together as we follow Jesus, blessing our neighbors and serving our city.

Young Lives

Serving at Young Lives CLUB

We are developing rhythms of doing life together around fellowship and worship, discipleship and mission.  To give you a sense of what it looks like:  On Sunday, some of us see each other at worship services offered by other churches.  On Mondays many of us serve at Young Lives.  On Wednesdays, some of us get together to learn tools and skills for discipleship (we call these “huddles”).  One Saturday a month, we all try to get together for worship (Faith Community Church generously gives us a space to meet).   Another Saturday in the month, we gather for a meal in someone’s home.   We have annual traditions, too: a food drive in the Fall, a Good Friday sunrise worship gathering.  And then there are the “organic activities”: neighborhood parties, prayer walks, helping one another move or do a home improvement project, and meals, desserts, snacks, and coffee.

Good Friday Sunrise Gathering

In short, it’s become a lot like following Jesus with a family – wonderful and supportive, but very intentional.  And our missional community families are open to new people who want to do life together and follow Jesus.

And I should mention: we also pray a lot.  We know we are a small group of people who really can’t accomplish.  But we serve a great God through whom all things are possible!IMG_7146
